Chapter Fifteen

Everlea

Jack didn’t say anything and neither did I. I wanted him again, more than before, if it were even possible. He walked toward me with a look so intense, it almost scared me. He lifted me straight up and I wrapped my legs around him, locking my feet together as he carried me into the kitchen, stopping at the screen door.

He kissed me thoroughly, and his hands were all over my body, all at once, so he was too distracted to open the door. I reached behind us, trying to catch it with my fingernails.

When we got out to the porch, he unhooked my feet, bringing my legs back around, and I slid down his body. Oh God, he was so hard and I wanted him so much. I swayed on my feet.

Grabbing my waist, he grasped and pulled at my shirt, bunching it up around my stomach, and when his skin touched mine, I gasped and moaned so loud. I thought the whole house probably heard it. I almost forgot about my scars, but I yanked my shirt back into place just in time.

“Evvie…” There was so much desperation in his voice. I understood. I felt it, too, but I still wouldn’t let him see me.

Turning, I jumped down the porch stairs and ran for the barn. I knew he would follow. It was the only place I could think of where we could be alone.

The sky stretched above us, so dark with the night and clouds, the air so still and thick. I could hear him behind me, chasing me, and it sent shockwaves to my nervous system, the building electricity in the air seeming to seep into my skin. It didn’t even occur to me to look around, to be suspicious of the world around me.

Halfway to the barn, he grabbed my hand, whipping me around to face him, but he dropped it, severing the brief contact quickly, like I’d burned him.

He stood there just staring at me while little raindrops fell on my face. As the seconds ticked by, they grew bigger and bigger and fell faster, but still, we stood motionless, except for our breathing. He looked at me, into my eyes, like he could see straight into my soul.

What did he see there?

I couldn’t guess and it didn’t matter.

The sky lit up with long flashes of lightning, and a big roll of thunder sounded all around us. Rain dumped down from above, soaking us instantly, but still, we didn’t move. It felt like the electricity grew from inside me. It reached out, trying to pull him to me, the energy between our bodies expanding all around us, but I couldn’t move my arms and legs.

I wanted my hands on him, my lips, tongue, but I knew, when I finally touched him, I would lose all control. The tightening feeling in the core of my body had become almost painful in its intensity as it spread throughout me, even to the tips of my fingers.
